American Greatness: Utah Bowhunter Downs Monster Buck

Austin Land, a 29-year-old bowhunter and guide in Utah, downed a 200-inch mule deer in the first week of the hunting season.

According to Outdoor Life, Land spent weeks scouting and four days hunting the 300-pound beast, whom he nicknamed Gear Head in honor of his impressive hardware.

Late last month, Land finally felled Gear Head with an arrow.

  • “Mule deer are my passion and to be able to take such a beautiful buck is an absolute dream come true. I could do this every day of my life,” Land said. “God bless mule deer.”

Ongoing drought conditions in the West are threatening mule deer populations, as well as fostering massive wildfires and battering agriculture.
