CNN Plus Is Getting Shut Down for Good

Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN, is shutting down the network’s video streaming service less than a month after its much-hyped launch.

SO WHAT

It’s another blow to the mainstream media.

THE NEWS

Warner Bros. Discovery is expected to announce the end of the struggling venture Thursday, Variety reported, citing two people familiar with the matter.

  • According to Variety, incoming CNN CEO Chris Licht sent a memo to employees Thursday morning, informing them of an “important meeting” to be held at noon.
  • That’s when Licht would break the news, the sources said.
  • Warner Bros. Discovery laid off CNN Plus’ chief financial officer and suspended all external marketing for the service, Axios reported Tuesday.

CNN Plus will cease all operations April 30, according to Axios media reporter Sara Fischer.

  • “It’s just complete shock across the network. I think we all knew some sort of reimagining was coming but not a total scuttling of the ship,” a veteran CNN producer told Washington Post media reporter Jeremy Barr Thursday.

THE STRUGGLE

CNN Plus’ woes have been well-documented since it launched in late March.

  • As of last week, the streaming service had yet to surpass 10,000 daily viewers, CNBC first reported.
  • Also last week, CNN reportedly slashed hundreds of millions of dollars of planned spending on the service.

THE TWEET THAT SUMS IT ALL UP

While conservatives celebrated CNN Plus’ demise, there were signs some liberals, like New York University marketing professor Scott Galloway, weren’t taking it well.
