QUOTE OF THE DAY: What If We Just Get Rid of Parts of the Constitution?

CNN contributor Bill Press argued in a Thursday op-ed for the network that the Second Amendment should be abolished to make way for stricter gun controls.

THE QUOTE

Writing in response to a recent string of mass shootings, Press lamented that “some conservative Americans that the Second Amendment is an open license arm themselves, even with weapons that belong on the battlefield.”

  • “The only effective way to deal with the Second Amendment is to repeal it — and then replace it with something that makes sense in a civilized society,” he continued, pointing to an “assault weapons” ban, background checks and other restrictions proposed by President Biden.
  • Press noted that two former Supreme Court justices have previously fantasized about scrapping the Second Amendment and argued that the law is “wildly misinterpreted” as “a license to kill as many people as you want with as many guns as you want.”
  • After acknowledging it would be hard, he concluded: “We are condemned to more and more mass killings until we do the right thing: Stop arguing about the Second Amendment — and just get rid of it.”

OK, BUT

A recent New York Times analysis of four statewide elections found that even a national referendum on background checks, one of the most popular gun regulations, would likely fail.

  • “The apparent progressive political majority in the polls might just be illusory,” wrote Times data guru Nate Cohn. “It simply may not exist for practical purposes.”
