Of Course There Was a Controversial Black Lives Matter Moment During the Super Bowl

Rapper Eminem took a knee Sunday while performing at halftime of Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles.

Attempts to portray the gesture as edgy were scuttled by the NFL’s response.

The Super Bowl halftime show featured a roster of aging hip-hop icons, including Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and 50 Cent.

When Eminem kneeled at the end of his 2002 hit “Lose Yourself,” many viewers saw a nod to Colin Kaepernick and Black Lives Matter.

  • According to Puck, the NFL denied Eminem’s request to take a knee during his performance,
  • But NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy later told ESPN: “We watched all elements of the show during multiple rehearsals this week and were aware that Eminem was going to do that.”
