Kamala Apparently Unaware She’s in Charge of the Border
Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday endorsed an investigation of “horrible” Border Patrol actions over the weekend — prompting some commentators to remind her that she’s supposed to be in charge of immigration.
SO WHAT
The Biden administration may have to choose between ending the border crisis and appeasing progressive immigrant advocates.
WHAT HAPPENED
Harris told reporters she was “deeply troubled” by images of Border Patrol agents on horseback blocking migrants from illegally crossing the southern border and “fully” supports a U.S. Customs and Border Protection internal probe of the incident launched Monday amid outcry from the left.

Conservatives, including Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill., accused Harris of piling on Border Patrol as agents deal with a historic surge in border crossings she was tasked with addressing.

Meanwhile, in response to a reporter’s question at the United Nations Tuesday, President Joe Biden reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to getting the border “under control.”

THE CONFLICT
Biden won the presidency as a relative moderate in his party on immigration, but he faces pressure from an ascendant progressive wing of his party that sees immigration enforcement itself as suspect.
