This Fascinating Data Point Suggests the Messaging About Vaccines Has Gone Seriously Wrong

Americans who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 are more afraid of the disease than the unvaccinated are, according to a new poll.

Public health experts’ message that the vaccines work isn’t getting through, even to those who supposedly “follow the science.”

The Kaiser Foundation Family survey, released Tuesday, found more than half of vaccinated adults are “worried they personally will get seriously sick from the coronavirus” — compared to just over 40% of their vaccine-free counterparts.

“Our messaging on the power of vaccines to protect people from serious illness has gone wrong somewhere,” Ashish Jah, the dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, tweeted in response to the survey.
  • Studies recently published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that getting vaccinated reduces the overall risk of death from COVID-19 elevenfold.
  • The vast majority of Covid-19 deaths have been among the elderly.

Some liberal commentators have come to concur with the conservative diagnosis of COVID-19 hysteria on the left.

  • “All the people who are panicking about the Omicron variant are either double or triple-vaxxed. Particularly for the latter, the risk of severe illness or fatality from COVID is comparable to that of the flu,” Shadi Hamid, a fellow at the Brookings Institution and a contributing writer at The Atlantic, wrote on his blog last week.
  • “They believe they are empiricists, when in fact they have unmoored themselves from empirical realities … In other words, if you think that you are some pure seeker of reason or science, you almost certainly aren’t.”
