QUOTE OF THE DAY: Democracy Dies When Americans Vote for Republicans

Washington Post columnist Max Boot argued in an opinion piece published Monday that choosing Republicans in November endangers “the continuation of democracy in America — and Ukraine.”

THE QUOTE

Republican candidates’ assertions the 2020 election was stolen from former President Donald Trump and the GOP’s relative indifference to the war in Ukraine add up to an existential threat to democracy, Boot claimed in the essay, titled “The midterms are a referendum on democracy in America and Ukraine.”

  • “Polls suggest that the economy and crime are among the most important issues for voters in the midterms — and that, as a result, Republicans are surging in the home stretch,” he argued. “I think a lot of voters are missing the point. These elections are actually a referendum on whether you favor the continuation of democracy in America — and Ukraine.”
  • His proposed solution was predictable: “If you support democracy in America and Ukraine, you need to vote for Democrats on Nov. 8.”
  • “If the current trends hold up, Republicans are likely to take over at least the House and quite possibly the Senate, too, along with many state offices,” he concluded. “This is how democracies die, both at home and abroad.”
