Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nury Martinez referred to her colleague’s black son using the Spanish word for little monkey in leaked audio publicized Sunday by the Los Angeles Times.
In a conversation with two other council members, Gil Cedillo and Kevin de Leon, and L.A. County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera, Martinez complained about fellow council member Mike Bonin’s black son’s behavior on a float at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade.

“The kid’s bouncing off the effing walls of the float, practically tipping it over,” she said during the conversation, which occurred in fall of 2021. “There’s nothing you can do to control him, parece changuito [he looks like a little monkey].”
- She also referred to the child as “su negrito” and said Bonin treated him like an “accessory.”
- Martinez and Herrera have since resigned their positions.
