WHAT HAPPENED
“Dogs are a tool of white supremacy and gentrification,” Faulding said in a viral April 2019 tweet, citing sociology “research” to support his claim.
Dogs are a tool of white supremacy and gentrification. That’s not just my opinion. There is research that shows how white newcomers dogwalking routes stake out territory. And white owners user their pets to socialize with other white owners excluding minorities. https://t.co/KoHnYAUQf6

Though widely mocked, Faulding’s tweet was part of a larger woke response to a local news report about students at Howard University, a historically black college in Washington, D.C., being upset by neighbors walking dogs across the campus.
- An article published by The Root began: “Howard University’s yard isn’t a dog park, but the historic black university in Washington, D.C., has been reduced to as much by colonizing residents who have made it their home (and Lassie’s).”
