Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., explained to The New York Times his success on TikTok, a social media app popular with teenagers.
In a Times feature story published Saturday, Markey joined other politicians in expressing enthusiasm for the video-based platform.
- “When I post on TikTok, it’s because I’m having fun online and talking with my friends about the things we all care about,” commented Markey, who is 75 years old.
- “I listen and learn from young people on TikTok. They are leading, they know what’s going on and they know where we are headed, especially online. I’m with them.”
While Markey, Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and others use TikTok for voter outreach, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., has branded the Chinese-owned platform a “national security risk.”
