QUOTE OF THE DAY: So What Are You Giving Up for Lent?

First United Church of Oak Park in suburban Chicago has announced it is “fasting from whiteness” during Lent.

The church put up a “Fasting From Whiteness” sign in its front yard that also reads: “This Lent we build our worship life around the voices of Black people, indigenous people, and people of color.”

  • “In our worship services throughout Lent, we will not be using any music or liturgy written or composed by white people,” the church’s website elaborates. “Our music will be drawn from the African American spirituals tradition, from South African freedom songs, from Native American traditions, and many, many more.”
  • The yard sign was documented by Turning Point USA Monday, near the start of Lent, a 40-day mourning period before the Easter holiday.

First United Church describes itself as an “open and inclusive Christian Community.”

St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Logan Square in Chicago drew attention in December when its preacher led a Sunday sermon for children while dressed in drag.
