The Miss America Pageant announced in a recent press release that it would be taking further steps toward judging women based on “wellness” instead of their “physical appearance.”
- “Miss America is pivoting their mission to define women’s wellness as being based on optimal health, rather than physical appearance,” the organization said.
- In the wake of the #MeToo movement in 2018, the 100-year-old pageant scrapped its famed swimsuit competition and said contestants would no longer be judged on how they look.
- “We’re experiencing a cultural revolution in our country with women finding the courage to stand up and have their voices heard on many issues. Miss America is proud to evolve as an organization and join this empowerment movement,” chairwoman Gretchen Carlson said in a statement at the time.
