Leading ladies of politics and culture flashed more than just skin at New York City’s exclusive Met Gala fashion fundraiser on Monday night — they also broadcast progressive political statements on their designer gowns.
The red carpet photos gave Americans a telling snapshot of their liberal elite, for better or worse.
BREAKING: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez just ROCKED the MET Gala with a gown that says "Tax the rich." ? ? pic.twitter.com/QbGAs7FoB0

Class war: But conservatives commentators cringed at what they saw as the absurdity of liberals posing as avatars of the marginalized while enjoying the trappings of wealth and power.
Nothing says modern leftism like a bunch of rich elitists at a $30,000 per ticket gala walking around in hideous designer dresses with empty political slogans emblazoned across them while an adoring press looks on and drools into their face muzzles pic.twitter.com/qR7Cc48OEP

As always, the Met Gala is proof that a bunch of cultural Marxists who supposedly hate capitalism live more like Marxist caricatures of capitalists than most capitalists do.

Many on the right noted that the congresswomen, like other Democrats before them, set aside their COVID-19 concerns for the event — which didn’t appear to be an option for the event staff.
A pathetic self-aggrandizing hypocrite.
Meanwhile our kids are muzzled & six feet apart all day long while trying to learn but she & these other “Rules for Thee but Not for Me” pols can parade around maskless & in top of each other at the Met Gala bc, SCIENCE. https://t.co/soAcjWUjNs

Girl power: Undaunted by their critics, the gala attendees’ accentuated their sartorial critiques of the patriarchy with ornate expressions of female empowerment.

And it wasn’t just biological women.
Elliot Page wears a green flower on his lapel at the #MetGala!
The green carnation became a queer symbol due to Oscar Wilde in 1892.
Wilde asked his friends to wear the flowers to opening night of one of his shows and the flower then continued to be an emblem for queer men. pic.twitter.com/T7POx4kV2w

After the Met Gala, Ocasio-Cortez addressed her “haters” on Twitter, framing her attendance of the event as a public service and a victory for black immigrant women.
- She also repeatedly tweeted her new catchphrase, “Tax the Rich,” while touting the massive tax and spending bill Democrats are trying to push through Congress.
And before haters get wild flying off the handle, New York elected officials are routinely invited to and attend the Met due to our responsibilities in overseeing and supporting the city’s cultural institutions for the public. I was one of several in attendance in this evening.?

Even conservative critics had to admit the night, if not the culture, belonged to AOC.
Guys, don’t make the AOC dress into a meme, even if you think it’s a fun message. She knows what she’s doing; she’s owning you.
