These 3 Quotes From Former DOD Officials Sum Up How Woke the Military’s Gotten Under Biden

Former Biden Pentagon officials suggested the U.S. exit from Afghanistan was undermined by “woke” distractions, according to a Fox News report published Tuesday, just ahead of a congressional hearing at which top military brass repeatedly contradicted the president’s defense of the withdrawal.

Critics say the American military is being weakened by internal campaigns against sexism, bigotry and other alleged evils under President Joe Biden.

Several recent Defense Department officials, speaking to Fox News on condition of anonymity, painted a picture of the Biden administration as less concerned with military readiness than with “left-wing cultural battle.”

One former senior official described weekly meetings about progressive causes attended by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and the secretaries of all the military departments,” saying the leaders were “spending all their time on these things,” likely at the expense of Afghanistan planning.

Another official accused the Biden administration of waging a “culture war” against its own service members.

Fox News pointed to a number of woke-ish actions by the military this year that have raised red flags on the right.

  • In June, Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., described hundreds of complaints from troops about “anti-American indoctrination seeping into parts of our military” that he said were reported to a hotline he set up with Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas.
  • In May, the White House appointed Bishop Garrison as senior adviser and head of the Pentagon’s “Countering Extremism Working Group,” despite outcry over his 2019 tweet saying, “Support for [Trump], a racist, is support for ALL his beliefs.”
  • In March, the Navy faced criticism after leaked slides from the military’s “extremism” training forbid soldiers from discussing “politically partisan” subjects — with the exception of Black Lives Matter.
  • In February, Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., and others objected to the Navy putting Boston University professor Ibram X. Kendi’s bestselling book “How to Be an Anti-Racist” on its recommended leading list.

Fox News Tucker Carlson has repeatedly gone to rhetorical war with the national security state, including when he in March accused Biden of feminizing the military with “inclusive” new grooming standards and uniforms for female troops.

Austin, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley and head of U.S. Central Command Gen. Kenneth McKenzie testified about the Afghanistan withdrawal before the House Armed Service Committee Wednesday after being grilled by senators on the subject a day earlier.

  • Senate Armed Services Committee members on Tuesday harangued the generals for the chaotic withdrawal — which saw American troops and Afghan civilians killed and U.S. citizens left behind.
  • Sen. Josh Hawley called on Austin and Milley to resign over their handling of the pullout.

Meanwhile, Milley and McKenzie testified that they had recommended Biden keep 2,500 troops in Afghanistan to prevent the collapse of Afghan security forces, apparently contradicting an earlier statement by the president.

  • Going a step further, Milley suggested Biden shouldn’t have put a date certain, Aug. 31, on the withdrawal, saying, “Make it conditions-based.”
