Nintendo has faced charges of “Italiaphobia” after announcing the star-studded cast of its new “Super Mario Bros.” movie.
Some Twitter users reacted with outrage, though not always apparently sincere, in response to the news that Chris Pratt has enthusiastically signed on to play Mario — despite the actor not sharing the iconic video game character’s Italian heritage.

According to Nintendo, “Super Mario Bros.,” entirely devoid of Italians in the main cast, will hit theaters in North America next December.
British actor Bob Hoskins starred in the 1993 live-action epic “Super Mario Bros” without provoking a national discussion about cultural representation and appropriation, but he still regretted the movie.
