The Worst Jan. 6 Takes, Ranked

On the first anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, many liberals took their doom-saying about the day’s implications to the next level.

SO WHAT

Democrats and journalists are trying to inflate the ugly riot into a world-historic tragedy and to use its memory to advance their radical agenda.

THE WORST TAKES

Here were the left’s most over-the-top takes on Jan. 6, in ascending order of hyperbole:

6. New York State Sens. Liz Krueger and James Sanders Jr. introduced legislation to make the date a state holiday called “Democracy Day.”

  • “Democracy Day allows citizens to reflect on how far we have come and how far we have yet to go,” Sanders said.

5. Vice President Kamala Harris in a commemorative speech at the U.S. Capitol compared Jan. 6 to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

4. President Joe Biden added that former President Donald Trump and his allies who sought to overturn the 2020 election results on Jan. 6 were holding a “dagger at the throat of America.”

3. The Washington Post opinion section published a fictional news report about Trump’s imagined return to power via a coup in 2024.

2. Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., tweeted that “Jan. 6 never ended.”

1. Ibram X. Kendi, a bestselling author and antiracist activist, claimed in a video message Wednesday that “white supremacists nearly stole an election by claiming black and brown voters had stolen it.”

THE POLITICS

Trump responded to Biden’s speech Thursday by accusing the president of using Jan. 6 “to try to further divide America.”

  • “This political theater is all just a distraction for the fact Biden has completely and totally failed,” Trump said in a statement.

Even some harsh conservative critics of Trump’s role in the Capitol riot agreed.

  • “It is now being exploited by the political class to dramatically revise republican institutions including federalism and the filibuster,” tweeted Daily Wire founder Ben Shapiro Thursday.
  • “The outsized focus on January 6 by the media and Democrats is a pure act of political opportunism, and should be seen as such.”
